Chrissi means “golden” and the tiny golden island is found at a distance of 8 miles south of lerapetra. It is not inhabited, but its gorgeous golden beaches have made it famous among Cretans and visitors. It is worth visiting the small and flat island for a few hours to swim and see the few places of interest. The cedar-tree forest, with more than 5.000 trees, or Belegrina beach in the north, where apart from swimming you will have the chance to see the fossilized sea shells that date thousands of years ago, or the small 13th-century church of Aghios Nikolaos, the Roman graves and the old lighthouse on the west part of the island. Chrissi has been included in the European Program for the Protection of places of natural beauty and importance.
