Chania, is the second largest city on Crete and the capital of the regional unit. It is situated along the north coast of the island, about 70 km west of Rethymnon and 145 km west of Heraklion. The municipality consists of the city of Chania and several other towns and villages. It was a significant Minoan city and it is identified with ancient Kydonia.

The area enjoys the typical Mediterranean climate, which is warm, sunny and dry during the summer and mild and rainy during the winter.

The city of Chania is divided in two parts. The old town with the old harbor and the new town, which was built outside the walls of the old fortress. Locals, as well as tourists, can enjoy long walks and shopping in both parts of the city. During the summer period a variety of cultural events take place on a daily basis. Theatrical plays, concerts and several exhibitions from Greek and foreign artists are organized either by the municipality or by individuals.

Chania is also famous for its wonderful beaches with golden sand and crystal-clear blue water. Within the geographical borders of the Municipality there are 11 beaches that have been awarded the Blue Flag and many other – organized or not – that are worth enjoying them.

It is a city worth visiting where visitors can combine sightseeing and relaxation.
