Aghios Nikolaos is an international and cosmopolitan resort that welcomes thousands of visitors annually. The most famous and captivating of its characteristics is the lake. According to the legend goddesses Athena and Artemis bathed in its waters. This lake is connected to the sea by a straight channel, while its natural surroundings of red rock and trees attract the visitors.

Next to the lake you can visit the small open-air theatre, for artistic and cultural presentations. A walk around the shops of Aghios Nikolaos is an enjoyable experience with mostly stores with a wide selection of traditional Cretan food, artwork and souvenirs, jewelry and embroidery. Traditionally items from wood like Byzantine icons are in every Greek house or woven goods. There are busy cafeterias, as it’s the locals’ favorite “sport”, whether you are looking for the youngsters’ “Frappe” or the more matures’ “Greek coffee” in charming coffeehouses. For dining there are lots of options for traditional Cretan “mezedes” in the many tavernas where the Cretans enjoy small plates of food with local wine or “raki”, or more interesting Mediterranean delicacies in restaurants. As far as night entertainment goes, a line of bustling bars by the port will guarantee you a good night out.
